  • Rental car: Chrysler LHS from Dollar

  • 3 weeks. Starting in Denver, visiting a friend in Colorado Springs. West into southern Colorado to Hot Springs and Durango. Mesa Verde National Park and the Four Corners site. Continuing into Arizona and across the Glen Canyon Dam and into Utah. Visited Zion National Park before we drove south to a very snowy and foggy Grand Canyon. We almost didn't see anything.
We drove through Flagstaff, Phoenix and Tucson before we entered New Mexico. We spent a few days in El Paso Texas and took a bus ride into Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Further east into Texas before we once again entered New Mexico and Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Visited the UFO-museum at Roswell, took a look at Albuquerque and Santa Fe before we drove across Raton Pass into Colorado. One more night in Colorado Springs and back home.

    Monday October 23rd

We got up early after a terrible night in our London hotel.  We took the Underground to Victoria Station where British Airways have a check-in counter for Gatwick.  After a bit of shopping at Victoria station,  we made a run for the Gatwick Airport Express and enjoyed a half hour train journey across London's south communities.  They said at the check-in that they had a light load and the big 747 was about half empty so we had plenty of space, but we were over an hour late leaving Gatwick because they had a problem with the air condition system, at least, that was what the captain said...

We landed in Denver not more than 30 minutes behind schedule and passed through imigration and customs before we jumped on a Dollar-bus that took us out to the rental car.  Denver International Airport is HUGE and is said to be the worlds largest airport, but certainly not in traffic though!  Very few international flights make a call here and currently it's only BA that makes non-stop flights from Europe, but Lufthansa is supposed to start a new service from Frankfurt in the spring of 2001.

The white Chrysler LHS shined outside the "Dollar-shack" and after putting our luggage into the fairly large trunk we were on our way to Colorado Springs and a couple of nights at my friend Geir's place. We went to Applebees for dinner and after an update about what was going on we soon hit the sack,  tired after a long journey...

    Tuesday October 24th

I got up at 5:30 (honestly!) because I couldn't sleep anymore.  After a couple of hours we were on our way to Denver and made a quick (?) stop at Caboose Hobbies, before we parked and rode the light rail into downtown.  We walked along 16th street mall and browsed the many souvenir stores selling genuine(?) Colorado artifacts.  We ate lunch at Hard Rock Cafe and enjoyed ourselves in the nice weather. We finished our Denver trip with a stop at Cherry Creek Mall - an upscale shopping center on the southeast side of town. Back in Colorado Springs Geir took us to his favorite Chinese restaurant and then we relaxed at his place before we got to bed.

    Wednesday October 25th

As usual, I was up early and had to wait for the others to get up... Geir made some delicious pancakes for breakfast and after a quick stop at the nearest supermarket we were on the road again. We followed I-25 to Walsenburg before heading west towards Alamosa. It was a beautiful day and the scenery was fantastic.

Across Wolf Creek Pass we got the first sights of snow and the temperature were around 0° C.  Hanne found a Siberian Husky that was playing in the snow.

We made a stop in Pagosa Springs just because Hanne saw a "cross stitch"-store, but it was getting darker and we decided to camp here for the night.  We found a Best Western and checked in, but when we later took a walk around town we discovered that there was another motel with several hot springs just across the street.

    Pagosa Springs, Colorado

Pagosa Springs was a typical little western town with several nice stores.  We ate dinner at a Mexican restaurant and spent the rest of the evening relaxing in front of the TV.  "57 channels and nothing on", Bruce Springsteen.
